Whenever I am asked by out of area real estate investors what is my favorite neighborhood for income property investing I always recommend the historic San Rafael neighborhood called Gerstle Park.
Settled by the Gerstle family over 100 years ago the neighborhood is home to both old Victorians that were converted to income properties after World War II and newer 1960’s motel style apartment buildings that are included in the mix.
Adding to the charm of the area is the Panama Hotel, a small bed and breakfast inn that provides rooms for tourists and family visitors and includes a wonderful restaurant for hungry locals and guests at the inn. Stop by on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons and you just may be treated to live music and dancing!
The sunny neighborhood is also home to Gerstle Park at the southern edge of the family friendly neighborhood where kids play areas and expansive lawns invite local families to enjoy the outdoors.
The most savvy investors have purchased homes and income properties here and a loyal following of tenants have found this wonderful neighborhood the place to call home.
Ten years ago you could buy a Victorian duplex for around $350,000. In today’s market, those charming Victorians and bungalows are selling for well over $1 million. With all of it’s amenities and family friendly attitude, this central Marin County gem will remain popular for generations to come.
